This native to Austria goes by the name 'Forellenschluss', which means 'speckled trout back'. Fedco Seeds traces it back to 1793, but says it was developed in Germany during the middle ages. Lettuce was commonly eaten during these times, so it is probably one of the most popular greens in Europe for a thousand years.
